I don’t like awards shows. I don’t think art is something that should be judged by just a few people. You know, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, or the ear if the case may be. But, on the other hand I love music so I usually watch the Grammy Awards and it was certainly a diverse show tonight to say the least. It was great seeing such a mix of musicians together in one place. As usual there were good parts and the not so good ones.
First of all, I really hate how so many amazing artists are always overlooked. Yes, even very talented, amazingly accomplished and extremely famous ones who sell millions of records aren’t even mentioned in the ceremonies. All of that praise could and should be shared with many musicians and songwriters, some of whom often never have their music heard outside their own hometowns. Someone even mentioned that during the show tonight. And yes, I know that’s what shows like American Idol are for, but even that is so very limited. Much too limited. It’s only a popularity contest and it’s really sad.
At least it was cool seeing Bruce Springsteen, Sir Paul McCartney and newer artists like the Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars perform. I absolutely love Bruno Mars’ voice. I saw him live this past summer and I must tell you that he sounds even more amazing in person. Bruce Springsteen and the Foo Fighters brought some real rock to the night and to me, well, it’s always beyond amazing to hear the Beatles’ (or one Beatle) no matter what.
Anyway, in my opinion, the jam at the end of the show was the best part. No judgement, just musicians having fun which is what music it’s all about!
